What is taurine?
Many people are familiar with taurine because it is often found in energy drinks - but what exactly is taurine and what does it actually do in the human body?
Another word for taurine is 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid. That sounds complicated, but put simply, taurine is an organic acid that is produced in the metabolism of many animals. Taurine is a degradation product of the amino acid cysteine. It is a semi-essential nutrient for humans, which means that people can produce taurine themselves, provided they consume the necessary building blocks (cysteine, methionine and vitamin B6) through their diet.
Of course, taurine can also be obtained from food, but it is only found in animal foods: Meat, fish, eggs and milk. An unbalanced or vegan diet can lead to a taurine deficiency.
The name taurine comes from the Greek word "taurus" which translates as bull or ox. The name comes from the fact that taurine was first isolated from ox bile in 1827 by Leopold Gmelin and Friedrich Tiedemann.
Nowadays, taurine has little to do with bulls because it is produced synthetically. This has the advantage that it is completely vegan and you don't have to do without it because of your diet.
What does taurine do?
Taurine is found throughout the body, but 75% of it is found in muscle cells, while the rest is mainly divided between the heart, brain and blood. The topic of taurine is an exciting one, because although we now know about many of the functions of this nutrient, there are still many unanswered questions.
Some of the clearly defined functions of taurine are as follows:
- It ensures the formation of bile salts (the so-called bile acid conjugates) and is therefore part of the liver-bile-gut (enterohepatic) circulation.
- In muscle cells, it acts as an osmo-regulator, i.e. it helps with the movement of sodium and potassium through the cell membrane and therefore also ensures that the electrical membrane potential remains stable.
- Conversely, it is also known that a taurine deficiency has a negative effect on the immune system.
Taurine and age
The ageing process is an extremely complicated process that is accompanied by many physiological changes. Many of these changes have not yet been fully researched or understood, yet each new finding is exciting and brings as much new information as it raises questions.
As recently as June 2023, a new study1 on the topic of ageing was published in the scientific journal Science. This study measured the concentration of taurine in the blood of various organisms, in this case mice and monkeys, and looked at the effect of taurine supplementation on the signs of ageing. The astonishing result was that the healthy lifespan of the animals was extended before the age-associated symptoms appeared. In mice that were fed a taurine-rich diet, in contrast to their counterparts in the control group, an increase in lifespan was also observed.
Of course, the results from mice and monkeys cannot be transferred 1:1 to humans, but the results are promising and provide a good basis for researching this topic in clinical studies in humans in the future.

Tip:
Taurine is particularly well absorbed when taken on an empty stomach. You can also take the capsules at different times of the day. Even if taurine is known from energy drinks, it has nothing to do with caffeine, so you can take taurine just before going to bed without having to worry about lying awake at night.
