Incidentally, the name "baobab" comes from the Arabic: "bu hibab" means "fruit with many seeds". The tree is also visually special: the trunk is noticeably thick, whereas the branches are almost inconspicuous. In Germany, it is therefore often called the "upside down tree". This is because it looks as if it has been stuck upside down in the ground.

The baobab is extremely resilient. It can survive very long periods of drought because it has a kind of water reserve. The sturdy trunk stores water and then calls it up when there is no more to come from outside - perfectly adapted to the tropical regions of Africa.
